Binghamton University is a public research university, with the main campus located in Vestal, which is a town situated within the limits of Broome County, in the Southern Tier of New York, between the Pennsylvania border and Susquehanna River. During the 2005 census, the population of Vestal was estimated at a number of nearly 28 000 inhabitants, growing from a number nearly 27 000, in 2000.
Binghamton University was founded in 1946, under the name of Triple Cities College, serving the needs of local veterans, who were returning from World War II, in the Triple Cities area. It was first established in Endicott, NY, as a branch of Syracuse University, being moved to its present location, in Vestal, NY, in 1951. The current name of the university was adopted in 1965, when Harpur was selected as one of the four university centers of SUNY.
Today, Binghamton University is known as one of the 4 university centers in New York State’s State University of New York system of post-secondary public education centers, growing since it was founded as a small liberal arts college, into the renowned doctoral-granting institution known today, consisting of 6 different colleges and schools, also having a secondary education center, located nearby downtown Binghamton, NY, presenting an enrollment of 15 000 graduate and undergraduate students.
The athletic teams from Bingham University are known as the Binghamton Bearcats, who compete in the NCAA, since the university became a part of the SUNY system, which is also a member today, of the America East Conference. The Bearcats are best known for their achievements in basketball and baseball, in which they’ve experienced victory many times in the past years, including in 2009, when the basketball team won the America East championship, automatically winning a spot in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
